5 Gestures
Gesture One[A beat. Both women sit in silence for a second. More than a second, even. Sighing, CONSTANCE breaks.]
CONSTANCE
Really?
JERSEY
Mm?
CONSTANCE
Nothing?
JERSEY
What?
CONSTANCE
I…
JERSEY
You…?
[CONSTANCE rises and sits up next to JERSEY.]
CONSTANCE
Kind of thought you would react differently…
JERSEY
I know.
CONSTANCE
Like maybe you would fold the blanket into a paper airplane…
JERSEY
Mm, yeah.
CONSTANCE
and that you would toss it (well-made) up up up until…
[CHRISTIANE peeks onto the stage, her hand in view,
and throws a well-made paper plane across the scene.]
JERSEY
Yeah…
CONSTANCE
Well, I’m not sure, maybe I expected it to
CONSTANCE, cont’d JERSEY [The paper plane hits the ground.]
Nosedive. Nosedive.
[A beat.]
CONSTANCE
Yeah, or maybe that you would roll me in the blanket like a wrap. Well, I suppose that you would wrap me in it.
JERSEY
Right.
CONSTANCE
Or…maybe…I saw somewhere that you can only fold a piece of paper eight times…Maybe I thought you would attempt that.
JERSEY, considering
Yeah…
CONSTANCE [CHRISTIANE peeks on stage again,

JERSEY
Why would I do that?
[CONSTANCE shrugs good-naturedly. They are both at ease. They usually are.]
[A beat. Both women sit on the couch facing the audience for a moment. They laugh.]
JERSEY
AAaaalright. Ready?
CONSTANCE
Yeah.
JERSEY
Let’s go.
[JERSEY and CONSTANCE rise and start walking off stage.]
CONSTANCE
Wear another cardigan, JERSEY.
[CHRISTIANE brings a doorframe just into view of the stage.
She painstakingly attaches the hinges to a door, swinging it back and forth, until finally, satisfied, she closes it loudly.]

]
[She pulls the door out of frame. The lights dim.]
[Daytime. A blender is on the counter, full of a sauce-like substance. CONSTANCE is lying on the couch reading a magazine. She checks her watch, calls someone. No one picks up. CHRISTIANE walks on stage holding a cardboard cartoon moon. She is wearing heels that look formal and office-ready.]
*click-tAP*
*click, click*
*Tap*
*click*
[It is very bright and very big. The lights dim as she enters, holding it up for a moment in the dark. Nighttime. A spotlight shines on her.]
*clack, click*
*click-TAP*
*tap*
*cliCK*
[She exits as the lights brighten again. A beat. Offstage, head peaking out, CHRISTIANE holds up a rooster. Eventually, it crows. Daytime. CONSTANCE is still reading magazines on the couch when the door opens and JERSEY stumbles in. CONSTANCE doesn’t look up.]
[JERSEY sits on the couch. A beat. Comfortable.]
CONSTANCE
Do you remember when we lived in that
weird place over on Kent and Washington?
JERSEY
Hmm…the one with the/ Jack and Jill bathroom?
CONSTANCE
/ Jack and Jill bathroom.
CONSTANCE, cont’d
Yeah, I was bad at locking your side of it, I remember.
JERSEY
Well, mostly you were bad’t unlocking it.
CONSTANCE
Both, maybe?
JERSEY
Well, I just care less about catching you
peeing. Maybe I remember it less.
CONSTANCE
Maybe.
JERSEY
It wasn’t really your fault. To be fair,
the apartment was like all cut up weird-

with the sandcastle between her legs. She has a play shovel and knife and is cutting the castle apart.]

or something. Like it was a house that was
cut into three not-quite-houses but not
enough not-houses for them all to be
unrentable– the perfect ratio
of not-house to normal-ish-house, I guess.
We rented it for a while. That says some/ thing.
CONSTANCE, laughing
/ I always wondered ‘bout the other
rooms there. Lots of unrelated tenants
in one unit…were they Jack and Jill’s too?
How awkward must that have been every day!
JERSEY
Mine wasn’t room-y, but more closet-y.
CONSTANCE
Fine then. We had a room and a half. And a toi/ let.
[CHRISTIANE is standing now, but only her bottom half is in view as she has thrust her hips forward; she
has sand in her hand and mimes peeing, like a guy. She drops sand. A steady stream.]
JERSEY, laughing in excitement
/ No. Oh my god! Don’t you remember? It was even weirder because it wasn’t just a toilet.
[CONSTANCE looks confused.
They are turned to each other
now, engrossed.]
JERSEY, cont’d
It was a toilet and a urinal!
[CHRISTIANE keeps peeing until no sand is left. Then she goes back off-stage. CONSTANCE seems confused, speaking slowly.]
CONSTANCE
I remember I’d wake up…and be…itching to take out my retainer…I’d wake up and slog over with my eyes closed and mouth wide open.
CHRISTIANE, whispering off-stage JERSEY
I saw this toddler once in the beach I didn’t see…I didn’t know you were…

You have no right, you know. I’ve become a smaller woman, but- and this time, the baby was all, “Hoo der?”

Finally, the baby said, “Shhhhmf.” CONSTANCE Dear, I know I’m not always what you want, but, well, you’re not either.
The mom said, “No, say(s)” and she repeats herself: JERSEY
I never said that you-
“say(s).” She pauses again, very patient. CONSTANCE
You don’t have to. I know, just like you do.
The baby, taking her time now, says, “Say?”
The mom corrects her: “Now, you say, 'says who?’” [A beat.]
I swear the baby nods and says, “Sae hoo?” CONSTANCE, cont’d
And it’s ok. Sometimes you want-
[CHRISTIANE peeks on stage with a boom mic entering with her. She kneels down and rubs leathery, gloved hands on the ground. With the mic on loud, it sounds like loud crashing waves.]
